Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Sony has added to its popular CyberShot W range with the ultra compact, wide angle DSC-W170 camera. Thanks to its automatic face recognition and scene modes, you''ll be able to take perfect shots in a snap! It has a 10-megapixel sensor with a Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens, a BIONZ processor and an optical image stabiliser, guaranteeing faster response times and sharp pictures that are bursting with colour! It also has a high sensitivity that goes up to 3200 ISO and a D-Range optimiser, which adapts to different lighting conditions to automatically adjust exposure and contrast levels. Sony makes intelligent photography with professional results available to everyone with the DSC-W170!

4 out of 5 stars Pretty decent   January 7, 2009
takes really good quality photos in daylight. good and powerfull flash, however not so powerful in large rooms. good selection of functions. the zoom is effective and powerfull, definite a plus point having 5x optical.

sleak and slimline so very transportable. However if you forget to buy a memory card at the same time you can only take 3 pictures! long battery life which is really handy for holidays.

A slightly negative point is that a few times it has froze for no apparent reason.

Overall a good quality camera at a good price.

5 out of 5 stars A great little camera   January 4, 2009
This is a great little camera, we bought this after quite a bit of research, to replace our very aged (but still functional) Nikon Coolpix. The camera is clear and simple to use, and using the automatic settings can pretty much be used straight out of the box. The battery life seems very good and with 4GB memory (extra) there is no worry about running out of space.

Whilst the camera is 10.1 megapixels I currently have it set a 5 which is more than adequate. The camera is compact yet still manages to pack in a 5x optical zoom. Two features that I particularly like are the ability to set the camera to shoot a continuous stream of photos and the smile recognition system. Basically the camera takes a photo every time it detects a smile. Whilst it does have a problem with detecting young babies it works very well with everyone else.

Overall this is a fantastic little camera, perfect for family use and great value for money.

1 out of 5 stars Broke in my pocket   January 3, 2009
I can't say that I got very far with the W170 because it broke in its first day of use. I am an everyday photographer, not an enthusiast. I still own a conventional SLR but since my first Finepix digital I have found that compact digitals fulfill my needs. My last Canon Ixus was very good but I wanted a wider angle lens and better LCD display. The Sony seemed to supply this and I took some lovely landscape shots before putting it in my jacket pocket (otherwise empty) and walking 3 miles to a pub for lunch. On arrival I tried to take a group shot and found that the lens cover was only partially opening. Inspection suggested that it had been distorted. I emphasise that it had not been struck or misused, it had just been in an otherwise empty pocket for a country walk.

I had bought a case through Amazon, but it arrived separately 2 days later. Perhaps if they had arrived together I would be writing a rave review instead? Certainly the few shots I took were in a difficult light across water with a low sun and I thought that the W170 performed very well with a clear image and good definition. As it is I can only say that the lens cover seems remarkably vulnerable to damage compared either to the Canon or Fuji in both of which it retracts much further into the body. If you buy a W170 I advise that you treat it very gently and keep it in a case at all times.

3 out of 5 stars memory cards ...   December 22, 2008
4 out of 5 found this review helpful

I bought this Sony Cybershot to replace my three-year old Sony Cybershot (which had stopped working - it shouldn't have, should it?!), thinking that at least I could salvage my expensive 1 gigabyte memory card. No Sir!
Sony have deemed it necessary to change the size of their memory cards ever so slightly, so that the old one doesn't fit by about half a milimeter. That's such a cheap an blatant money-seeking exercise, that I can't help feeling cheated by the company. And that's why I can't give this product more than 3 stars!
