5 out of 5 stars Very happy with this cheap 'n' cheerful all-in-one   December 30, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

Bought this printer in December and have had no issues using it with my laptop running Vista.

Previous reviews complaining about freezing or asking to re-install may be due to the older drivers and software provided. The latest version (v11) I've had no issues with to date.

And to balance out all the negative comments about no USB cable included. It was clear to me the cable was not included with the printer. Having previously owned a USB connected printer I had a cable anyway, so I'm happier paying a few pounds less for a printer rather than ending up with another cable I'll never need.

1 out of 5 stars a very lazily designed printer   December 10, 2008

I have never wrote a review before, but with the trouble i have with this machine i feel inclined to.

-first off as has already been mentioned there is no cable included, i know this is a supposed "industry standard" but honestly, why? why is it so hard for a company to supply a simple usb cable? -i think its because they can then get away with charging 10 at pc world for something that costs about 10p to make. VERY unethical in my opinion!

-one thing i have learned about printer manufactures is that they almost give away the printer, then make up on ink cartridge sales, replacements for this machine cost up to 30. this again, is a shocking rip off when you consider they cost about 7 to refill, and remember that the bloke at the ink shop is still making enough of a profit from this to offer the service! on top of this the hp drinks the ink like a fish and can barely get through 100 pages of text with the odd image without needing a replacement.

-the scanner, the reason i actually bought a machine like this in the first place is below average, very poor at picking up reds, but what annoys me the most is the quick scan button is appalling at detecting where the image is on the page. it crops areas of the image in a bid to be "economical" on file size, but ends up producing bizarre details of the middle of an image that are no use at all, meaning you have to go through your pc and do it manually to get what you want, which takes three times as long and is painfully tedious. i have yet to find out how to get a quick scan of the whole page as default- if indeed it is at all possible!

-the whole design of the paper feed is rubbish, no where for the printed pages to go except sit on top of the blanks like a beached whale, providing they don't fall to the floor of course!

-Finally my biggest complaint is printing on photo gloss paper, where the ink seems incapable of sticking to the page and runs uncontrollably, i know its not the paper since it works perfectly with other printers, cleaning doesn't work and as i see in other reviews is a common problem.

on balance it prints ok text, and works without a glitch on my mac, but don't let this in any way cloud the fact that this is a woeful effort from hp. if you're thinking of buying this based on looks (as i did tisk tisk) don't because the performance doesn't match, especially if you need a good scanner or photo prints- buy something else and don't suffer my disappointment.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful little printer (and works great with Linux!)   November 8, 2008

This is a superb little printer at a superb little price. I've had it for a while now, and haven't yet discovered any annoyances at all.

I *would* have given it 5 stars, but I'm afraid I knocked one off because of the manufacturer's mind-bogglingly cheapskate decision not to include the necessary printer cable. If the cable was an expensive item, it might be understandable, but since you can buy one for only 2-4, it's just... well, it's just plain cheapskate.

Of course, if you're replacing an older printer, you'll already have the cable, but that's not really the point.

Having got that off my chest, I've nothing else against this machine whatsoever.

I use Linux, not Windows, and I half-expected this to be a problem. In fact, it wasn't. I plugged it into my Arch Linux machine, and everything worked immediately. It even prints from my Ubuntu Linux laptop across my wireless network.

Print quality is great, and it prints *considerably* faster than my previous printer, an Epson.

It uses two cartridges, one for black and one for colour. This is also much better than the Epson, which required *4* cartridges, and refused to print at all if even one of them fell below the required level (the 'required level' was always a mystery to me, because the printer regularly declared that a cartridge was empty even when it was plainly about 30-40% full.)

Anyway, to sum up, I think this is a great printer and at a great price.

2 out of 5 stars I hate my printer   October 22, 2008
4 out of 7 found this review helpful

I really hate my printer. I was pleased to get a cheap multifunction machine like this but when I opened the box on Saturday night to set it up I had my first surprise that a usb cable wasn't provided so I was forced to wait until Monday to buy this cable, which should have been in the box in the first place.
But the worst thing about this printer is the papertray. I still haven't figured out how to put paper in this machine. Either it tells me there isn't any paper in it, or it pulls in 10 pages at the same time, then gets stuck, I must have ruined about 500 sheets with this printer yet.
I just wish I would have spent more money on a better printer...you get what you pay for.
