2 out of 5 stars Seriously lame   August 7, 2008

I love Sanaa Lathan and after watching Love and Basketball, Disappearing acts as well as Something New, my expectations were high. After 3 minutes I stopped the DVD to check that I had the right film because up until then, it comprised a bunch of hip hop artist (most of whom I have never heard of) boring me with their tales of what hip hop means to them.

After 20 minutes I realised that I did not like story, characters or the acting. Everything about it was lame. I found the story contrived as well as weak with no depth or meaning. The characters were monotonous, uninspiring and totally uninteresting. In my opinion, Lathan and Taye Digg's acting was weak and to me, there was no on-screen fizz or excitement between them. They did not make me want to care about the characters (let alone the story for that matter).

The only reason I have given this two stars was because of the two wannabe rappers (one was black and one was white). They were funny, in a perverse kind of way.

Overall, a disappointing film.

1 out of 5 stars Rent / Buy at your peril!   April 26, 2008

I love chick flics but this film is total rubbish! Not only are the references to Hip Hop completely overdone (and hence overshadow the story and spoil what would otherwise be a good plot), but you seriously can't understand a word anybody says! The slang that's used is way overdone for the film market, so unless you have a dictionary of 'gansta / Noo Yoik' to English you're gonna struggle. It tok me 3 attempts to watch this and now I wish I hadn't bothered.

If you want a good chic flic just go rent Bridget Jones again - I swear it's better than this!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent   March 8, 2008
I saw this movie a few years ago and absolutely loved it. It is a great mixture of love and laughter, and if you know any thing about 80-90's hip hop then you'd absolutely love the way the movie takes you back to those days and makes you remenisce on the good ole days.

I loved this movie so much that I am now buying it as part of my collection! Don't hesitate to watch it.

T xx

5 out of 5 stars "Whats the difference between saying you're in love and being in love?"   June 12, 2007

"The same as the difference between rap and hip-hop. Rap is just a word."

The whole film is full with deep lines like this and that's really what makes the film superb along with fantastic acting. I don't think my review is really necessary if you've read the others, because there are actually very few- if any flaws with this film.

I've watched it so many times I could probably recite the whole thing and everytime the film still feels new. It's my all time favourite romantic-comedy, even though I don't really want to call it that, it doesn't deserve to be lumped in that catergory.

It's a film about hip-hop and love, pure and simple, and I recommend buying the soundtrack because it's as much apart of the film as anything. Songs like Love OF My Life (Erykah Badu) and I Used To Love H.E.R (Common) and also Get It Together (India.Arie) blow me away.

I could go on, I love it that much. Buy it. I promise you, you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous movie even for hip-hop virgins   July 11, 2005

Awesome movie, touched my soul, great symbolism of true love, it happens to focus on hip hop, but what shines through is the love of two people and whether you are into hip-hop or not it cannot fail to pull at your heart strings. Watched it for first time a month ago and still on my mind, so I am gonna buy it so can watch it over and over again :o)
