Amazon.co.uk Review Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic takes place just a few years after the Mandolorian Wars, thousands of years before the events in the Star Wars movies we know and love. Two Jedi, master Revan and his apprentice Malak, led the Republic's forces to victory and pursued the Mandalorians into deep space only to return as Dark Jedi at the head of a huge fleet of Sith warships. Its your task to find out why. The storyline could have been a standard coming-of-age yarn but is instead a genuinely interesting adventure that gradually unravels your connection with these events. The game's planet-hopping adventures are driven by your exploration of these connections and how they relate to your larger goal of discovering the source of the Sith's surprise fleet. During your adventure you can explore side quests minor (such as racing swoops or gambling) and major (such as uncovering the fascinating back stories of your companions). Star Wars fans will get a kick out of the rich lore introduced in the game, particularly the Tatooine storyline that reveals the origin and history of the Sand People. Gameplay is an abbreviated form of Wizards of the Coast's d20 Star Wars RPG game system. The player creates a character as a member of one of three starting classes (soldier, smuggler, scout) and then later chooses a Jedi class (guardian, consular, sentinel). Joining the player's character are other Jedi, warriors, thieves, droids, a wookiee and even a Mandolorian. Combat is real-time turn-based, meaning the turns are seamless but the player has the option of pausing the action at any time to issue orders or direct any character to use a certain Force power, ability, feat or item. Graphics range from adequate to exceptional. Lightsaber graphics and environmental effects (like waving grass, clouds and weather) bring the world to life. Complete with sounds straight out of the movies, the thrilling combat is pure Star Wars. All in all, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is a masterpiece of Star Wars gaming. The pacing, balance of action and dialogue, clever puzzles and quests and loving attention to detail have set the bar very high for role-playing games in general and Star Wars games in particular. Consider this a must-have game. --Mike Fehlauer

Be prepared to give this game a few weeks of your life! July 4, 2008 This is my fave game EVER on the xbox! and one of the few that i have played right to the end. I love the aspect of being 'good' or 'evil' and how your character can change in looks depending on which side they are on!. The adventure part of the game is great some interesting puzzles, lots of choice to make, lots of gameplay. The graphics are pretty good and for the hard core star wars fan (which im not i'm afriad) there are some recognisable aliens and such like. I can honestly say i enjoyed every minute of playing this! and if you like this game you have the second KOTOR to have a go at too.
Even if you don't like Star Wars this is a great game in its own right! so which side are you going to be on.....?
All Time CLASSIC June 15, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Even though we have now got the xbox 360 and ps3 i would highly recommend this game to anyone, this game is highly addictive as you always want to know whats next in the story..the beauty about this game for me and for all people that play this game is the interactive factor..you can either stay on the good side with the Jedi's or lean towards the dark side depending on your responces..ive done about 20 hours of gameplay and im probs a third of the way through the game..
The other really good thing about this game is you get to dual fight and pod race to earn your credits(and more things to do later on in the game)..
Overall a SUPERB game..A MUST for any Xbox owner or even a 360 owner..
My favourite game of all time... January 6, 2008 ...Even though the sequel was around the same level Kotor is still my favorite because of the characters and the storyling which is entralling. Buy this game!!! i can't say enough good things about it and for this reason i'm going to keep it short. This game is epic one of the best ever made and if you like this one, which you should do, then get KOTOR 2.
My favourite Star Wars video game ever June 22, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I remember when this game came out and I really wanted to play it, but I couldn't as I only had a Playstation 2 and didn't want to buy an Xbox at the time as it was too expensive. So when I eventually got round to buying one in 2004 when the price was slashed to under 100 I couldn't resist any longer. Anyway this was one of the first games that I bought for it and it is now in my all time games top ten and I have been playing videogames since the Atari 2600 over 20 years ago.
There are truly awful games, bad games, average games, good games, great games and truly outstanding games, this is what I class as a truly outstanding game. The way that I judge what makes a truly outstanding game to me is simply that I can't stop playing it until I have completed it. It took me about three weeks to complete this although I probably would have completed it sooner had I not played as much Paazak (a card game that I found extremely addictive) and not had an obsession with having to open every single container to get every single item. Some people don't think that this game feels star wars enough as it doesn't have any of the main characters from the films, but for me even though it is not based on any of the star wars movies, it feels more like star wars than any other star wars game that I have ever played. I was never a fan of role playing games until I played this so you don't have to really like role playing games to like this. The best way to describe this game is a role playing game in a Star Wars universe, where you can choose your missions and do them at your own pace in a similar way to, say for example Grand Theft Auto and it also has a similar feel to it as say for example, the Deux Ex games.
I am not usually bothered by stories in games but I have to say that I was completely hooked on this one and as the game progressed I found myself genuinely caring about the characters. Also in the story, there is a twist that completely shocked me, maybe it was just me that was a bit slow in not guessing this twist earlier, but honestly it was an emotional moment, one that I don't think I will ever experience again in a videogame.
Anyway, although I say it is a truly outstanding game, I have to point out just a few negative comments. Apart from the Ebon Hawk (your starship for travelling to and from different planets) there are no vehicles, and when you complete the game, unlike Grand Theft Auto you cannot carry on playing the game which is a shame as I had wasted my time opening every container and saving every item for nothing. One last negative comment is that once you have visited a planet and completed all the missions on that planet, there is no reason to bother going back.
So all in all if you have recently got or are planning on getting an Xbox and are also a fan of star wars or have just never got round to playing this game, then you would be crazy to ignore it.
Good fun, but story often a little naive and unimaginative April 8, 2007 3 out of 7 found this review helpful

KOTOR is fun and the ability to finally be a Jedi (with a lightsaber!) in an RPG game is a dream come true. The standard Bioware character progression system is one of the best in the business (based on D&D).
The main storyline itself was not groundbreaking, but does have an absolutely fantastic twist in it that you'll never see coming. However, most stories are blatantly based on Star Wars movie subplots and this makes the game feel a little unimaginative in places.
The light/dark side system is very poorly executed with light/dark side points being awarded almost at random: I found myself saving the game before big decisions so that I could pick the resolution that the game deemed to be the "good" one. Checking your stats at the end of the game and seeing your "pure light side" character having maimed and destroyed over 500 people simply screams of hypocrisy. This could have been done much better.
Although the game boasts 9 support characters, only 2 or 3 of them are actually of any use... with the rest simply being comedy sidekicks or characters with only a specific use. Most of the support characters could easily have been NPCs with their missions being optional missions. And I really wish Bioware would stop forcing a romantic relationship between the lead male and female characters... they've been doing it since Baldur's Gate and it only worked there because it was such an epic game. It doesn't work every time!
The gambling mini-game is moderately interesting, but the speeder racing is a complete waste of time... given that almost everyone in the target demographic hated Episode I, especially the racing and the silly floppy water dwelling creatures, this could easily have been omitted. The space fighting mini-game was interesting the first time, but it soon lost its appeal. My conclusion on the mini-games is that they add nothing to the game experience and I can easily live without them, I would prefer that more development time had gone into further story lines.
