Call of Duty returns, and to many people?s surprise, it?s going back to World War II. While original series creators Infinity Ward brought the series into the modern day, developer Treyarch are setting out to make the definitive historical first-person shooter.
The Soviet attack on Berlin features intense street battles
Take on the Japanese navy as you board a U.S. flying boat
World at War features the most realistic fire effects ever
The new ability to swim adds to both the story and multiplayer modes

The game is primarily set in the Pacific theatre and has a much more realistic, violent tone requiring less-linear game play than previous Call of Duty installments. You'll struggle to survive Japanese attacks without mastering new gaming skills, like swimming or how to use a flamethrower--a weapon that packs some punch in the fully destructable game world.

Also featured is a campaign on the Eastern front, where you take control of a soldier in the Soviet Red Army during the attack on Berlin in the closing stages of the war. The game also includes the series? first co-op mode, while the competitive multiplayer mode aims to build upon the achievements of Call of Duty 4 and add to the game?s longevity.

Key Features
  • Dual campaigns: Fight in two very different World War II battles. Take on the Japanese Imperial army in the Pacific, and liberate Berlin as part of the Soviet Red Army.
  • Grim realities: Experience the most bloody and realistic combat ever seen in the series, as you witness enemy atrocities and wield horrific new weapons such as the flamethrower.
  • Job with benefits: Revamped competitive multiplayer mode features useable vehicles and an expanded perks system from Call of Duty 4.
  • Brothers in arms: For the first time, a Call of Duty game features a four-player co-operative mode that?s playable online or via a split screen option on the same console.
  • Modern graphics: The game uses an enhanced version of the Call of Duty 4 graphics engine, with wood that splinters realistically when shot and fires that spread organically.
About the Developer: Treyarch
One of publisher Activision?s biggest internal studios, Treyarch have worked on many of the company?s best known titles, from the Spider-Man movie tie-ins and spin-offs to several of the Call of Duty sequels and the new James Bond game, Quantum of Solace.

4 out of 5 stars what a great game   January 9, 2009
I bought this game from amazon and amazed with how good it is. The graphics are amazing and i like the way they brought the vehicles in this game. There no let downs i can think of and i recomend this to any gamer who likes a good war game.

2 out of 5 stars Same As COD4!   January 8, 2009
I fully expected World at War to improve on areas that were weak in Modern Warfare, such as the graphics. However, i found World at War to be almost identical to Modern Warfare, apart from the obvious differences like it's set in World War Two. There have been no improvements in graphics, the campaign seems to follow the same pattern as Modern Warfare; for example, you engage in a sniper mission like in Modern Warfare and have to take out a similar target too. Also, you play a mission in a aircraft firing at ships, very similar to Modern Warfare.
Having played Modern Warfare religiously, i was full of optimism for World at War. Yet, it became the biggest let down of the 1 and 1/2 years I've used an Xbox 360 for. However, alot of my friends seem to play this game so i won't get rid of it for that reason only.
Having compared World at War and Modern Warfare i really do prefer the latter; the weapons are more exciting and there is alot more enjoyment in Modern Warfare; for example, you don't get kicked from the game for 'accidently' killing two of your teammates. The last thing I'd like to say is that i can't wait for Modern Warfare Two! Hopefully that will restore my love for the Call of Duty series!

5 out of 5 stars Call of Duty greatness continious   January 8, 2009
I would seroiusly reccomend this game to all xbox 360 lovers
When i first got this game for christmas 08 i wasnt sure it could get to the next level after cod4.
trust me, it did
firstly the campaign is better because it is slightly longer and the new competetive co-op online and with your frinds.
it is very fun collecting the death cards and the achievments are challenging but fun to get.
the online also is extrememly good and addictive - like cod4. i enjoy the new weapons even though it has gone back to world war 2, the challenges are new and improved. its really good.
I also really enjoy playing the new nazi zombie mode which is unlocked after you complete the campaign. when you are with your freinds it is challenging to get to higher waves but you soon get the hang of it. its pretty scary but is a great new part to the game.
Buy it, you wont be dissapointed! =]

5 out of 5 stars Incredable   January 8, 2009
On the back of the box it says the best war experience ever. The box does not lie! Best game I have by a long shot. The levels are challenging but not to challenging. It is very addictive, i was playing it for 4 hours a day! Great, if you don't buy this game your such an idiot!

5 out of 5 stars Great game!   January 8, 2009
After a long time out of the gaming scene (I was a master at Quake back in 96/97 haha) I decided to get myself an xbox, an LCD TV and Call Of Duty World At War.

So for a newbie I didn't know what to expect - but the game is class. Didn't take me long to get into. The gameplay, graphics and everything are excellent. Looking forward to online play.

I hear that Modern Warfare is better, probably because of the advanced weapons etc. However I have no problem with this game, varied weapons and great gameplay.
